Fast Fashion Finds or Luxe Capsule Investments?

My Take on Building a Balanced Wardrobe

For the longest time, I was a single mom with zero budget for wardrobe upgrades. When I finally had a little extra—maybe $150—I was thrilled to splurge on some cute new tops and pants from Amazon. I’d spend hours blissfully searching, feeling like I got a ton for my money.

These days, money flows a little more easily into my wardrobe budget. I can now afford the luxury of shopping at higher-end retailers—by that, I mean buying the top from Anthropologie instead of the knockoff from Amazon.

And yet… I still find myself returning to my Amazon cart.

Even though I’ve saved countless Pinterest posts about the value of a French capsule wardrobe, and I aspire to join the #OneItemAMonth club (basically allocating your entire monthly budget to one high-end item), I can’t fully give up the fun of fast fashion. It’s affordable, exciting, and lets me try new trends without overthinking.

💬 Heads up! This post isn’t sponsored. I only share what I genuinely love and use in my own life. Some of the links below are affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission (at no extra cost to you). Thanks so much for supporting Girl Gone Glam—I appreciate you!

To complicate matters, I’ve listened to podcast after podcast warning against influencer culture, fast fashion, and the environmental impact of all this overconsumption. I even posted recently on Instagram that the French government banned fast fashion influencing. C’est incroyable! And now, my logical brain is at war with my creative, fashion-loving heart.

My Middle Ground

Here’s where I’ve landed:
Some pieces I’m totally okay buying inexpensively, even if that means sacrificing quality or a name brand. Think:

  • T-shirts
  • Casual denim
  • Pajamas
  • Everyday shorts
  • Sundresses
  • Trendy styles I’m unsure about

For other wardrobe pieces, I want them to look, feel, and be luxurious:

  • Purses
  • Jewelry
  • Shoes
  • Watches
  • Sunglasses
  • Hats
  • Undergarments
  • Coats

Take this recent Prime Day: I snagged trendy boxer shorts for $9 that I’ve already worn 10+ times—under $1 per wear, a total win. On the flip side, I bought a $35 purse that looked rich but felt cheap… and somehow that bothered me more. The fake luxury felt inauthentic.

This mirrors how I approach my home too: our headboard might be an affordable Amazon find, but we invested in a quality mattress and high-thread-count sheets. The result? A bed that feels luxurious, even if not every part of it was a splurge.

Why Certain Items Feel Worth the Investment

I’ve realized it’s not random. I value specific wardrobe pieces more because they:

  • Make a statement – Jewelry and watches elevate your entire look.
  • Are highly visible – Like coats, which cover half your body and create a strong impression.
  • Impact comfort – Like well-made shoes or supportive undergarments.
  • Reflect status or polish – Think name-brand sunglasses or purses.

And yes, sometimes it’s just about the brand. Especially for purses and accessories, certain labels do carry visual and cultural weight.

Final Thoughts

It feels good to know I don’t have to give up my love of either Amazon finds or intentional, luxury investments. As long as I’m mindful—avoiding overconsumption, managing returns, and donating what I no longer wear—I’m okay with straddling both worlds.

What about you?

Affordable Fashion Finds (I love and wear!)

These fast fashion and fun seasonal trends have been a hit for me this summer:

  1. Trendy boxer shorts – I recently grabbed these boxer shorts during Prime Day and I’m already on my tenth wear.
  2. Easy summer sundresses I’ve worn this adorable corset dress, boho floral sundress and trendy bubble skirt dress on repeat this summer.
  3. White tee shirts or my new favorite summer sweater When it comes to basics, I’m totally fine going with The Drop white teeAnrabess drapey white tee or this feels like luxury summer sweater from Amazon.
  4. Denim Jacket – I recently purchased this more boxy denim Jacket to replace my dated slim fit one and I love it!
  5. You can view all of my Girl Gone Glam summer wardrobe favorites from Amazon here.

Hi, I'm Kerry. I've spent the last five years learning how to be more beautiful through a whole lot of self love and beauty school lessons. For me personally there were a lot of internal emotions (feelings of unworthiness and self doubt) holding me back as well as downright not knowing the ins and outs and tricks of the beauty game. I've worked so hard at overcoming so many internal hang ups while at the same time diving head first into learning how to step up by beauty game on the outside. Now I'm here to share my journey and help you with yours! My bigger job in life is as a mom of two young beautiful humans (a 20 year old daughter and 12 year old son), two pups and partner to the love of my life. I'm truly blessed and feel so loved and inspired to share my love of all things self-love and beauty with you.
